Riding Safety Tips for Motorcyclists (Part 1)
Riding motorcycles can be exhilarating, cost-effective and liberating. Despite such financial and emotional benefits, however, riding motorcycles also comes with a downside, particularly when it comes to the significant risks that these vehicles can bestow on riders.
Specifically, the major risk associated with riding motorcycles comes in the form of getting into serious, potentially fatal traffic accidents. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration points out that motorcycle riders are involved in approximately 11 percent of all fatal traffic accidents in the U.S. despite the fact that motorcycles only make up less than 5 percent of the registered vehicles on U.S. roadways.
Given these significant risks, it’s vital that motorcycle riders always ride defensively by following these riding safety tips:
- Never ride without wearing a DOT-approved helmet – California law requires all motorcyclists to wear helmets, and these helmets should be approved by the Department of Transportation. Regardless of how far a rider is going, he or she always wear a DOT-approved helmet – not just because it’s the law but also because it could save his or her life.
- Wear other safety gear – In addition to wearing helmets, riders should also wear other safety gear to protect their eyes and limbs in the event they are in a motorcycle accident. Other essential safety gear can include eye goggles or glasses (if a helmet doesn’t have a face shield), riding gloves, boots, and thick jackets and pants. By wearing such gear when riding, motorcyclists can reduce the chances that they’ll sustain serious road burn or other severe injuries if they are in traffic accidents.
